Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish with fantastic world-building! The novel references events that took place in the short stories published prior to this, but it's not essential that you read those first--you will just be rewarded if you have。 Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish with fantastic world-building! Wow。 This book really blew me away。 You know that feeling that you get the first time you read or watch media that is so charming and entertaining you know it’s going to be a cultural phenomenon if it isn’t already? That’s how I felt reading this book。 It is certainly deserving of being a sensation。 It is extremely entertaining, heartwarming, unique, and action packed while also managing to be at times profound, and revolutionary。The characters in the story are so well written, somehow managing to be dazzling and also relatable and charming。 I fell in love with a characters so fast。 Characters have very clear and memorable personalities, and deep attachments。 The relationships are believable。 The story takes place in a fanciful modern (ish) Cairo, where Djinn live amongst humans。 The Djinn are all unique in appearance, personality and professions and truly charming。 The world is intimate and specific but stillFeels very big。 The expansiveness of the universe is somehow clear in this story。 The story twists and turns and takes you on a wild ride! So much happens, and THE ACTION! The action was so engaging, and fun, and creative! Ooh! Really truly a great strength of this book!On that note, I feel I have often felt disappointed by the action movies and books that I grew up in because I didn’t see myself in any of the women in those stories, and often felt uncomfortable with how women were treated or depicted。 Sometimes even chauvinism wasn’t deliberately a part of their construction, the tropes associated with action lingered。 I realized I felt very free to love this action adventure novel because the female characters were so rich and believable。 Also instead of merely avoiding chauvinistic tropes, this book goes out of its way to artfully incorporate feminism。 There is a queer relationship in this story that feels so deep and sincere and wrought with passion and love without the need to control the other。 The book also has themes involving power reminiscent of Tolkien。This book impressed me, was extremely entertaining, but also action packed and really good for my brain。 I understand why it has made so many lists and won so many awards。 Highly recommend! 。。。more

Fatma is a fascinating character, and it was so lovely to be able to spend a whole novel of time in this world。

A very fun read, I was immediately sucked into the mechanical mystical universe of this story, additionally it is rare to read a novel with Middle Eastern characters, dress, and worship as the main focus。 I recently watched Ms Marvel the teen Disney show about a Pakistani girl in jersey so this was a fun one to and a joy to read。 One spoiler, there are also LGBTQ+ characters。 I’d definitely recommend this if you’re into mystical mystery。

Loved this book! The setting is phenomenal and I’m excited about future installments。 I do hope he keeps writing short fiction that is connected to this universe。

Ooh! This was fun! It's 1912 in Cairo and there's all sorts of magic in this steampunk alternate universe。 Fatma is one of the few female agents working at the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities。 But when she catches a case where a secret brotherhood of over twenty are found dead, their bodies burned, but their clothes and all the surrounding furnishings unharmed at the same time she's assigned an unwanted rookie partner, she knows there's going to be trouble。 I got the Ooh! I had a fun time with this one, even if sometimes the worldbuilding can feel a little loose。 That's why I'm glad I read the 3 prequel novellas because I already felt reasonably grounded in the world。 It's such a unique setting, unlike a lot of the other fantasy coming out right now。 I love our main character and her new partner。 The biggest downside was I guessed the twist (aka who the villain was) from pretty much the start。 On one hand, I personally think that was the best way to go about it ( I had a fun time with this one, even if sometimes the worldbuilding can feel a little loose。 That's why I'm glad I read the 3 prequel novellas because I already felt reasonably grounded in the world。 It's such a unique setting, unlike a lot of the other fantasy coming out right now。 I love our main character and her new partner。 The biggest downside was I guessed the twist (aka who the villain was) from pretty much the start。 On one hand, I personally think that was the best way to go about it (anything else that seemed possible to me would have felt stupid) but then again。。。I guessed it! So I feel like there's no winning for the author there。 Regardless, this is fun and cool and unique so I'd definitely recommend to fantasy fans looking for something steam punk! 。。。more

All this book's best aspects are aesthetic in nature。 The world is immensely stylish - everything you want when you hear 'steampunk 1900s Cairo full of magical beings'。 The representation and exploration of social issues is also great, as is the basic characterisation of all the cast。 It's fundamentally a very fun book。If I had to pick a criticism, I would say the structure is incredibly linear。 It plays like a detective videogame, with isolated, tightly paced missions slotted in one-to-a-chapte All this book's best aspects are aesthetic in nature。 The world is immensely stylish - everything you want when you hear 'steampunk 1900s Cairo full of magical beings'。 The representation and exploration of social issues is also great, as is the basic characterisation of all the cast。 It's fundamentally a very fun book。If I had to pick a criticism, I would say the structure is incredibly linear。 It plays like a detective videogame, with isolated, tightly paced missions slotted in one-to-a-chapter very discretely - each chapter gives the reward of a new key clue, which is interrogated directly by the next chapter, and so on。 I'm not a connoisseur of detective stories, but I sense it might have been more rewarding if there was less predictability about that, if the clues interacted with each other in a way that was not so direct, our previous understandings were challenged more, something like that。 。。。more

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again I love P。 Dejli Clark’s ability to create these wonderfully complex fantasy worlds that are rooted in truth while also inspiring a feeling of hopefulness。 Hands down my favorite fantasy author。Summary:It takes places in an alternate history in Northern Africa in a world that has gained access to magic。 This story focuses on Djinns but there are so many wonderful magical greatest and mythos explored。 It addresses the what if’s of colonialism and independ I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again I love P。 Dejli Clark’s ability to create these wonderfully complex fantasy worlds that are rooted in truth while also inspiring a feeling of hopefulness。 Hands down my favorite fantasy author。Summary:It takes places in an alternate history in Northern Africa in a world that has gained access to magic。 This story focuses on Djinns but there are so many wonderful magical greatest and mythos explored。 It addresses the what if’s of colonialism and independent former colonies on a world stage: ethically and diplomatically。 We follow a dandy lesbian Fatma as an agent at a federal agency in charge of respond to circumstances caused by magical mischief, mismanagement, and malice。 Not to give any spoilers but you see a wonderful cast of diverse (ethnic diversity, National diversity, socioeconomic diversity, and LGBTQIA representation)。 20/10。 Also, if you read my review on The Haunting of Tran 015 you’ll know I love Agent Onsi, we get him an Agent Hamed back in this story!Loved: Honestly what didn’t I love?!? 2。5 stars rounded down。 This story seemed like it dragged on forever。 The world building and descriptions were fabulous, but not enough to bring up this rating。 The end could have ended several times but it continued on。 It pains me to give this book a low rating, as there are many themes I enjoyed, but the story just didn't grab me enough。 2。5 stars rounded down。 This story seemed like it dragged on forever。 The world building and descriptions were fabulous, but not enough to bring up this rating。 The end could have ended several times but it continued on。 It pains me to give this book a low rating, as there are many themes I enjoyed, but the story just didn't grab me enough。 。。。more

Writing this review many months later。 Enjoyed this one and would be interested in a follow up but it wasn’t my favorite。

Wow, what a book! Fun, compelling plot and characters that I felt invested in。 It has almost a procedural feel to it at times due to the nature of the main character being an investigator, but the book capitalizes on that to introduce you to a wide cast of characters and to really draw you in to the fantastic world that has been created here。 I’d definitely recommend!

God, what a ride。 I'm ashamed at how long it took me to finish this masterpiece of a book, but I did and I don't regret it。I'm always left dazzled after finishing any of these stories, it's like playing with a kaleidoscope (Do those exist anymore。) and suddenly having it jerked out off your hands when you're done。 Feeling lost even。Such a rich composition of characters, backgrounds, everything there is to it feels like a feast to the reader。Long story short, I'm in love。 God, what a ride。 I'm ashamed at how long it took me to finish this masterpiece of a book, but I did and I don't regret it。I'm always left dazzled after finishing any of these stories, it's like playing with a kaleidoscope (Do those exist anymore。) and suddenly having it jerked out off your hands when you're done。 Feeling lost even。Such a rich composition of characters, backgrounds, everything there is to it feels like a feast to the reader。Long story short, I'm in love。 。。。more

This was just fine。 IMO fairly forgettable and didn't have the best flow。 I didn't know this was technically book 3 in the series but I don't think reading the other 2 would have changed my opinion too much since it was easy enough to hop in。This person perfectly verbalizes my thoughts: https://www。goodreads。com/review/show。。。 This was just fine。 IMO fairly forgettable and didn't have the best flow。 I didn't know this was technically book 3 in the series but I don't think reading the other 2 would have changed my opinion too much since it was easy enough to hop in。This person perfectly verbalizes my thoughts: https://www。goodreads。com/review/show。。。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 True rating 4。5 stars。It was spectacular, but there were some decisions that are keeping me from giving it five stars。 I was reading criticism and they said the author seemed more interested in world building than storytelling。 I don’t know if I agree, but I do think a lot of the world building we see is somewhat cosmetic (like the steampunk elements): I loved the setting in Egypt though, and it’s sad that we don’t have more stories from Egypt in the west。I thought all the characters were great, True rating 4。5 stars。It was spectacular, but there were some decisions that are keeping me from giving it five stars。 I was reading criticism and they said the author seemed more interested in world building than storytelling。 I don’t know if I agree, but I do think a lot of the world building we see is somewhat cosmetic (like the steampunk elements): I loved the setting in Egypt though, and it’s sad that we don’t have more stories from Egypt in the west。I thought all the characters were great, and the dialogue was impeccable (though anachronistic)。 And I loved all the magical creatures。I don’t think the main character had a true arc though。She seemed like a largely complete character and the growth she had in the story was somewhat minimal。 It reminded me of mysteries in the classic sense, where the detective is a fairly complete character。 The only thing that changes are the victim and the culprit。 I think this is probably because of his background in short stories。And The villain and their motivation was somewhat cartoonish。 It was the main reason I can’t give this five stars。Overall though, I loved it。 I’d highly recommend it, and I’d definitely check out another novel。 。。。more

I loved the book immensely。 Fatma is the best dressed main character I have ever come across and I envy her wardrobe!Apart from that, the world-building and the story held me in a strong grip and now that it has ended。。。 I only wish for more。 I can not help but to laugh and grin at Fatma-Hadia interactions and wish to see more of it in the future (but there might not be given the epic ending and the epilogue that followed)。 Fingers crossed still as I am a hopeless reader!

Supernatural creatures are in our world of the early 20th century。 Fatma el-Sha’arawi, special investigator with the Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities is investigating someone who claims to be the person who opened the world to them。 But the djinn and other creatures are living well with humans。Award winning novel。 This is the author's first novel, although he has some shorter works that I will soon get。 They seem to have been mentioned in the novel。 Supernatural creatures are in our world of the early 20th century。 Fatma el-Sha’arawi, special investigator with the Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities is investigating someone who claims to be the person who opened the world to them。 But the djinn and other creatures are living well with humans。Award winning novel。 This is the author's first novel, although he has some shorter works that I will soon get。 They seem to have been mentioned in the novel。 。。。more

This was a fun, relatively light hearted yet interesting read! I enjoyed the world building aspect of the story despite the fact that it was in the steampunk genre。 The history and lore along with the magic system were so well thought out。 My favorite aspect was the variety of female characters, I loved how they were portrayed - each one individualistic and strong in her own way。 Only criticism I have is the pacing was a bit slow for my liking, and the mystery itself was somewhat predictable。

A Master of Djinn was a delightful read。I wasn't expecting it to have so much to offer。 I thought it was just another mystery with magical and supernatural elements, but it's more than that。 The mystery is strong, and the whodunit aspect made me glued to the pages。 On top of that, I love Fatma, and all the other characters in the story。 They're very well-written。Reimagining history is no easy task for authors but P。 Djeli Clark did it masterfully, and after reading this, I searched for his other A Master of Djinn was a delightful read。I wasn't expecting it to have so much to offer。 I thought it was just another mystery with magical and supernatural elements, but it's more than that。 The mystery is strong, and the whodunit aspect made me glued to the pages。 On top of that, I love Fatma, and all the other characters in the story。 They're very well-written。Reimagining history is no easy task for authors but P。 Djeli Clark did it masterfully, and after reading this, I searched for his other works。 I will certainly read them someday。 。。。more
